So a lot has happened since the last posting. We went to Cambodia and picked up our son Lorin from his mission. We finished our back yard. Lorin and Zoie started School at BYUI. Before you know it Erika will be home from her mission in Uruguay.

No new babies thank heavens. We will leave that up to our Nieces and Nephews who are doing a great job by the way.

We just keep plugging along in our usual way. Fall is in the air and we are preparing for Winter. The economy has taken it toll on Real Estate but we keep trying.

My favorite quote, inspired by a brother who doesn't ever read this blog.

The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails. (he always knows how to adjust the sails)

Three weeks today. Don't worry, I won't hurt myself playing volleyball. I'm not quite as intense as most of the other people. Hermana Lisiate is way into sports though, and she was so sad she couldn't play anymore! I just try to keep track of the elders that like to dive a lot or who will go for the ball without calling it. Our district is pretty good about not doing that, but some of the hungarian zone you've gotta watch out for. Elder Smeltzer really likes to dive, but it's really funny, in the dolphin show sense of the word.I am learnign how to overhand serve right now too. I can get it over the net (In bounds) aboiut 65% of the time, getting better though. Lorin: That's good voting went uneventfully, even though you were bored. Good to hear you cleaned your kitchen too. I miss having a kitchen actually. Keep up the awesome work, I know your companion will be good. If he's not you'll whip him in to shape. The Cambodian mission terminology is awesome. Te Amo! (I love you!) It's good to hear Joe got married. Oh, darn. I didn't get to do yard work all day with you. Your trip up the canyon sounds cool though, espescially the weasel. We have so many sparrows here you could probably support a population of weasels if they were feisty ones. That's about all the animal life there is here, though I did see one robin in the courtyard the day after it rained. When the Joseph Smith movie we were watching got out on Sunday Hermana Crowley and I just went and stood in the rain for ten minutes because we were in class the day before when it was raining really hard. Yes, I got the bank card and the pin number for it. I'm going to check the balance on it either tomorrow or the next day. The tape player is cool. Did you record the 'Sounds of Glory' cd on one of them? I asked if we had that CD in a letter but it was probably mushed in with a bunch of other stuff. Is that the CD with the 'hal-e-hal-eluia' song in it? I like that CD. I love getting the packages: the flag won for coolest thing mailed by family so far. Anyway, my time is almost up (<1 min) so I'm off for now. I'm drawing a letter up with the rest of the stuff in it for you and Lorin. Love you always!Hermana Erika Baird

Remodel

So I think that because of all the noise most of you are avoiding our house. I think you are smart to do so. The ceiling is now all the way torn down and the Master bath is completely torn down. I have to ask my self on a regular basis if I am crazy or if I just have a little too much energy I don't know what to do with. Here are a couple of pictures so that you can avoid the house and still see what is going on. We have to deal with the sewer pipes this week and then we can put the ceiling back up. We will have gained about 12" in the dining room and 20" in the kitchen. After the ceiling is up we move on to the floor. That we will do at the same time with the bathroom floors. It will be a tile extraviganza. Not fun but in the end should really change the look and feel of our home. If any one is board you can help us on any given day. We need help sheet rocking, wiring lights, with tiles, and of course with painting. Not that we expect it but if you want to pitch in give us a call and we will give you an approx date.

We talked to Lorin today and he is doing great. Teaches about 8 discussions per day and rides his bike 30- 40 minutes between each one. He bore a great testimony to the kids and talked alot about the people there. He has really grown to love them. He is doing the right thing and he knows it.

Dear Family of Elder Baird,

Yesterday was transfer day. Elder Baird went from one extreme to the other in the course of one short day. We picked him up at his Sen Sok house about 11:00. Many many people were sad to see him go. We got his luggage and his bike loaded in and on the car. Then we took him and his companion to Phnom Penh for a steak dinner to thank him and to celebrate the transfer. Next we all went to the Mission home / Mission office. There he met his new companion. They loaded his stuff onto a gongbay or tuk tuk ( little cart pulled by a motorcycle) and they went to the bus station. From there he and his companion would have taken a 5 hour bus ride across most of Cambodia. They would have traveled through some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. Upon arrival in Siem Reap he would be taken to his new house. It is a new house!!! Four Elders live there. That area has only been open since last April. The house is new and pretty, spacious and clean - quite a switch from a smaller place with intermittent electricity and water. The Elders in Siem Reap are the best of the best. His Zone leader - Elder Masters - used to be an Assistant to the President. He is a remarkable missionary. Tomorrow Elder Baird will attend Church in the newest branch in the mission. The Branch president is a Senior missionary couple - Elder. The first counselor is a Khmer friend of ours and the second counselor was a young Elder - full-time missionary just a few months ago!

Even though that Branch is only about 10 months old it has an average attendance of about 100 each week. It is a fantastic place to be a missionary. The city is beautiful with many many lovely hotels and restaurants. It definitely caters to tourism. I was there just last Monday with one of our sons. The Ankor Wat Temple and the hundreds of other ancient temples and ruins attract visitors from all around the world. As you can probably tell, we really like Siem Reap and we also really like Elder Baird!! Attached are photos to tell "the rest of the story". If you have any questions just e-mail.

Bronte Cuts off her hair

Well it has been along time in the growing but it is long enough to donate once again. Bronte and her two friends went and cut their hair this week. They will give it to a company that makes wigs for people with cancer.

Dear Parents of Elder Baird,

Happy New Year from Cambodia. We continue to appreciate and enjoy our association with Elder Baird. What an outstanding young man and what a great missionary. We had fun Christmas celebrations with him and the other missionaries in his District. We have attached a few photos of him at the Christmas Eve party at our house, the Christmas day dinner and District meeting. We always appreciate his assistance with music. These are some of our favorite pictures that he sent to us. Kids seem to follow him every where he goes. I think they are attracted to his good nature. The teens in the next picture are the members in his ward. The next two pictures of his day in the rice fields. Talk about thrusting in your cycle with all your might. Then on to two more of his fans. One of which has tatooed his chest with an "S " to match Lorin's superman p day shirt. The wilson ball was his Christmas present. There are small messages written all over it from his family members. The market where he buys food. A boy they helped on a service day while working with they eye doctors. More Christmas, Pday in the jungle and a cooking adventure. He tells us this is nothing compared to what they have seen in the kitchen. Service day helping the dentist. and more pictures of the pday in the jungle. It was all the same p-day and the only one they have done any thing out side the market and mission home. A zone activity that he really enjoyed. " there were some bat caves there some where.

Dear Family And Friends, Not a 2007 Christmas letter but something like it
It has been a few years since I wrote an annual letter out but I realize I enjoy hearing about families through letters at Christmas time whether I have kept in touch throughout the year or not.
Our kids are all growing up so fast and life has not slackened its pace. Sometimes it’s an effort to stop and catch your breath and then sometimes life just takes your breath away.
Erika, 20, is in her third year at BYU-I studying art illustration. She is meticulous in her work and amazing in her talent. She has great roommates and the best job ever as dance costume shop design and production under my old roommate from college, Cindy Guthrie. She will never turn down a late night bowl of Reese’s peanut butter ice cream and loves writing stories.
Lorin is serving a mission to Cambodia Phnom Penh where he rides a bike a lot, plays the piano and loves teaching the people. He is learning how to cook with the native foods and enjoying the 80-degree weather while we are shoveling out from yet another snowstorm. He also studied at BYU-I before he left learning Physics, which he loves.
Zoie, 16, is again the president of the Spandex Club that she founded at Alta. She plays some wild and crazy music on the piano, is learning Chinese and guitar. She sings in the choir with her cousin and does awesome imitations of outrageous accents, but not on demand. She has a love/hate relationship with calculus.
At 14 Bronte loves to cook, sing, play the piano and read. She is ever thoughtful and quiet and if you can’t find her she is in her secret reading place or under the pine tree at the corner with her friends. She is becoming a tae-bo expert so beware.
At the effervescent age of 12, Quin is still an avid jewelry designer and keeps her little business going with orders from school. She plays piano and flute, loves to read and be crazy with her friends. She is a pretty good poet too.
Sabrina at 8 has been trying out her aptitude in piano, singing, saxophone, recorder, jazz, tap and ballet. She likes a lot of different things but playing dolls and pet shops with her friends is still at the top of her list. Cleaning her room is not at the top of her list. She is reading the chronicles of Narnia.
Dave is still a realtor with Coldwell Banker. He keeps the office lively. He still knows just about everyone and can manage to make just about anything happen that needs to get done, especially if prefaced but “you can’t do …”. He still loves road biking, skiing, movies anytime, fixing things, woodworking and good food served hot.
Camille is enjoying being a mom, finishing some long term projects or at least working on them (scrapbooking! Argh) She also likes road biking, music, reading, gardening, cooking and good fresh air in the mountains. She is happy to sweep the floor several times a day because it means we have lots of happy feet coming and going.
Every year we learn and grow. Our understanding increases and we learn new ways to serve. It is only by the connections we make outside of ourselves that help us understand life and self better. Throughout the year we are so grateful for all that we have been blessed with. May this letter find you enjoying the best things in life; family near and far, friends old, new and not yet known.

Rocking Horse

These are some of the pictures from the making of the rocking horse for Scott and Lisa. We created it for My brother when we noticed how much fun his grand daughter had riding one at my dad's house. We hope they like it and that their grand kids enjoy coming to their house so see them and to see the horse. We had a lot of fun making the horse. It was much more of a challenge than we anticipated but in the end was worth every hour that we spent. There is still a debate over the name. I think we should name it tres semanas. (Thats how long it took to make) It was Designed by my brother in Law Leon and Painted by my daughter Erika. It would still be a 2x10 with out their help. Thanks to both of them for all their help.
